LE VOYAGE CONTINUE: Data Science
SCA Mentorship Program — Month 2
Echoing the words of Benjamin Franklin “Without continual growth and progress, such words as improvement, achievement and success have no meaning”
Moving up the learning ladder has never been so much fun!!!! Finding the right outlet to quench that unceasing [passion for growth is the most fulfilling feeling in the world. With the unwinding of the time and learning timeline, the journey of a 100 days culminates in satisfaction with immense wealth of knowledge, experience and priceless value being acquired by me.

While, Seeing how far along in a journey one has come in a journey at mid-point might be difficult, with learning it becomes easy to evaluate progress with the amount of knowledge imparted, acquired and exposure to new technical skills, not forgetting the invaluable resource of networking.
According to, Carol Dweck, “when we have a “growth mindset”, we believe that our intelligence, creative abilities, and character are things that we can improve in meaningful ways.”
The immense support and encouragement from teammates and the community at large is highly appreciated, She Code Africa gave me the platform to be part of the few chosen candidates still enjoying this wonderful opportunity of being mentored in the past 2 months.
Permit me to say, She Code Africa has a well-structured guideline for learning. Data science is broad but this month’s learning opened my eyes to the database management and data visualization tools.
The week started off with the realities of working with database, querying of databases, visualization and how to gain meaningful insights from data. Below is the summary of Topics learnt so far this month and assignments given so far.
WEEK1: SQL (MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQLite)
Basic SQL (PostgreSQL)
SQL Joins
SQL Aggregations
SQL Queries
WEEK2: Tableau for Data Visualization
Basics of visualization with Tableau
Creating Dashboards with Tableau
Creating Stories with Tableau
This is a link to my published Article on the Tableau Public here
WEEK3: PowerBI for Data Visualization
Basics of visualization with Tableau
Creating Dashboards with PowerBI
Creating Reports with PowerBI
Data Modelling with PowerBI
DAX
The Assignment given was a dataset that comprises of the suicide details and GDP of countries.
WEEK4:
REVIEW of SQL, TABEAU and POWERBI
Summary
This month is full of exciting topics ranging from SQL to Power BI etc.
Every week has always presented an interesting challenge, opening pathways to learning new concepts this month. I was particularly thrilled by SQL for database. It’s been like having some super powers. As it is clear that a data scientist or analyst without the knowledge of database management is boring.
Week 2 was extremely beautiful and fun filled. I love Tableau, from the beginning till the end of the lessons, even though I had some challenges while trying to download the Tableau Desktop but after that I enjoyed every bit of this week. I worked on a dataset “World University Ranking”.
Week 3 started on a slow note unlike the Tableau week for me. But with time, it became more interesting. The datasets given were interesting and full of insights. In a nutshell, the deeper we go, the more challenging it becomes but the stronger, bolder and better equipped I become, I can humbly say I can analyze data now and get meaningful insights
Conclusively, I can’t thank She Code Africa enough for this beautiful opportunity as I look forward to learning more from the concluding month. Applying for this program was one of the best decisions I made this year!!!
